Oxtongue River-Ragged Falls Provincial Park, Algonquin’s Little Brother
Driving along Highway 60 through Algonquin Park, with dark clouds up above and poring rain on the asphalt. As I exited the park, I pulled over into a parking lot to take a break. Little did I know that this was also another park, and out of curiosity I ventured out of my car lured by a sign for a waterfall. The rain subsided just enough to be able enjoy the view that was presented to me, after only a brief walk. Welcome to the Oxtongue River and its Ragged Falls!
Geography
Located at the western edge of Algonquin Park, this park traces the Oxtongue River out of the park towards its resting place at Oxtongue Lake, a few kilometers downstream. As such it feels like a strange little extension of Algonquin Park itself, without any of its traffic.
Exploring the Falls
Lets be honest, the only reason people visit this park is for the views of Ragged Falls. From the parking lot the trail up to the falls is nearly 0.7 miles or 1.1 kilometers. The climb itself is not more then 105 feet or 30 meters, most of that elevation coming at the half way point from the parking lot.
At the top of the falls, you will be privy of views of the chute heading downward. At this elevation you can also walk around the rocks that divide the falls into a series of rapids and canals before they remerge into each other.
Conclusion
Although not part of Algonquin Provincial Park, this set of falls on the Oxtongue river feels like it should be part of that park. Make sure to stop! Not many people do, but it is absolutely worth it.
