What is Hloubětín Castle?
This Neo Gothic castle lies in a far flung suburb of Prague, in what was one a little hamlet.
How to Get to Hloubětín Castle From Prague (Metro) ?
From Prague 1, you can take the metro, Line B (the yellow line) to the Hloubětín metro stop. From here the castle is a 10 minute walk south east, after you pass under the major roadway. You will be able to see a few older buildings that were once the core of the hamlet here but outside of the castle this is a mostly suburban area.
A Visit to the Castle
Officially, the castle is closed to visitors. But if you are inconspicuous you can sneak in for a peak. There is a park beside so it is relatively easy to walk around the property without being a weirdo!
If you are interested, walk behind the building for a view of one of the towers of its bastion walls.
Near the front of the castle itself you will find a cemetery with an old gothic church.
Listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Lands, the castle itself now serves a private hospital of some sorts (gynecology and reproduction!) after being returned to the Jewish community in the 1900’s. I walked though the front gate to grab this picture and it did not seem to be a problem.
The two-story building (with a three-story tower) dates from the second half of the 19th century with a core of the building itself is much older. The medieval castle that once stood on the site was burned down by the Swedes in 1648. It was replaced by a neo-baroque villa by Dr. Václav Linhart and eventually turned into the neo-gothic structure you see today by Vladimír Židlický. It was owned by the Jewish community but confiscated by the occupiers during the Second Wold War and used after the war as a playhouse.
Since then it has also appeared in a few Czech films and television episodes.
